Has anyone had a problem with the exhaust manifold breaking on Saito 91's it's the angle one not the fully threaded straight one. I have 1 Saito 65, 5 72's, 2 100's and 2 125's plus the 91 and it the only one which breaks the manifold I have now broken two both in normal flight.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
All, I ordered some WildCat 5% Premium to try in some of my fourstrokes, I tried it in my old high compression Saito .80 today.
Saito .80GK with TurboHeader with baffle installed.
Prop==Bolly 13.5x6
Fuel==WildCat 5% nitro fuel with 16% 80/20 syn/castor blend
Plug==Fox Miracle
Peak rpm==10,366
Idle rpm==2,050 give or take a few depending on the wind direction.
When I would whack the throttle open it would transition instantly accompanied by a healthy puff of smoke. The midrange is clean and linear, I have the updated spraybar in it. No amount of idling would make it load up or hesitate.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
A couple of years ago I bought a gallon of Wildcat from a guy at our flying site. He said he didnt like it, and sold it to me for $10.00. I wound up tossing it. Maybe it was too old, but it wasn't discolored or anything. I could get my engine started, but it wouldn't run good enough to try to fly with it. I suppose it's possible that he had been messing with the mixture and adding stuff, but he didn't mention anything like that, he just said that he didn't like it. Im afraid of Wildcat now, and it's probably only because he didn't tell me something he should have.

I've been using it since 1992 and I attribute never having replaced a bearing in any four strokes to using the WildCat. I did replace the cam in my Saito 1.50 because the rear cam came loose. I have two Saitos and one Enya from 1991. At the Toledo show people line up in crowded lines to get it.

Im sure there was something wrong with that gallon, but he didn't fess up to it. If it wasn't good, people wouldn't buy it... I normally use Cool Power 15% for my Saito's, but lately i've been using R&T 20/20 because my Revo's Picco .26 and my helicopter's OS 32 like it real well.

Krop,
Sorry it took so long to reply. I have been out of town. I like the numbers you reported. They are consistant with other installations. Don't forget to let me know how you like its sound in the air.

I need advise. MY Saito 120 dies when I go to full throttle. It starts like a dream and run all day through mid range but as soon as
I open it up it will die and I must quickly drop back to mid throttle for it to come back. I have run the needle in and out and no effect. I have chnged the plug also. I am running the engine inverted and the fuel tank is set right. I have a straight pipe on it and was wondering if I need more pressure from the pipe at full throttle.

Your lowspeed needle might be a bit too lean. Try richening it up about 1/8 turn to 1/4 turn.

He said that opening the needles had no effect. Hmmm... Remove the fuel line from the carb, crank the engine and make sure fuel squirts from the hose good. Also, check the fuel lines for a crack. I hope it's not a leak in the clunk line. Have you removed the HSN and pumped fuel thru it yet. It may have some crap in the carb. You might have a look at the carb mounting O ring too. Also take a close look at the HSN o ring.

IT won't be in the fuel tank or line. It does the same thing on the test stand. I just bought this engine used. I checked the carb mounting o ring but not the HSN o ring. I will take a look there. I will also remove the HSN.
I'll report back. Thanks!

I'm not sure. It's been 25 years since I was in school so things have probably changed. I guess my kids stuff is rubbing off.
Okay, I did all of the above and no change. I closed the choke about 3/4 and the thing runs like a stripped hind end Ape. Doesn't that say that I am a having a fuel draw problem? Could it be lack of pressure from the pipe?

Brewerjk,
That is exactly what it sounds like. By closing the choke you have restricted the airflow to match the fuel flow. You are running lean. Assuming your needles are properly adjusted, you may want to consider the fuel tubing used. Make sure it is not too small. I don't believe that is the problem. I would lean more toward tank pressure. Are you running a fuel strainer? Did you use it on the stand also? Make sure it is clean. Make sure you don't have any leakage around the intake manifold as well.

I have heard of that being done. You could give it a try. Saito's are known for having good fuel draw. How long is the pipe? You stated that opening the high side needle did not change anything. That would indicate that you can't supply enough fuel for the airflow. Manually restricting with the choke balances the fuel/air. I have seen straight pipes run with a fitting without problems on other Saito's.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Here is a picture of what I did to the pipe. I used a dremel (Dremel- Starts every time and has smooth transition) to cut tabs in a washer and pipe clamped to the end of the pipe. It will open up now and I can set HSN. Now to figure out how I want to permenantly restrict pipe and how much. No restriction and not enough fuel. To much and what? I gues I need to find the amount that gives good fuel. The test is on. Any other thoughts?
