Use a good after run oil and omega 15% or equivilant fuel. I use marine storage fogging oil for aro and haven't had a problem in years.

I have a 270 Saito twin, I was hoping that all you Saito fans could give me your best ideas for a aircraft that would be a perfect match for this engine.

Does anyone know if Saito discontinued the 150? Horizon doesn't have one on their site. I have one and am looking for another for a Dynaflite PT-19. Also, does the new, slightly bell-shaped muffler have any obvious advantages over the short, cylindrical muffler? Thanks.

John, it looks to me like they still offer it. Here is a link: [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/RelatedParts.aspx?ProdId=SAIE150&Category=Parts%20Listing&Tag=PF]Saito 1.50[/link]

There is not any difference in sound or power between the current cast muffler and the earlier straight machined mufffler.
The earlier muffler is still available http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...dID=SAI120S74B

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi all, new Saito 100 owner here. I have been running an APC 15 x 6 prop so far and am fairly pleased with the performance. I do mostly IMAC style flying. I want to try a few other props though for comparison and would really like to try a couple of wood props to see how throttle response changes compared with the heavy APC. Has anysone any experience with the pro zinger or especially the Menz standard wood props on the Saito 100? Any other suggestions? I have seen some new Xoar props around but can't seem to find anyone who stocks them in a 15x6?

Chris, I use a 13.5-8 Bolly on a couple 100 saitos and it gets the job done pretty good for me, but I don`t do the 3-D stuff, would probably be to much pitch and to short for that....would probably depend on the plane and what kind of flying you want to do, I have them on a 60 Super stick and a Tiger 60....good luck John

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I bought a new saito 82a a few weeks ago. Broke it in according to manual. Since new (now about a gallon through it) it has been unresponsive above 3/4 throttle.
Saito 82a
XOAR 14x6 wood
OS F plug
powermaster 20/20
inverted and cowled on an extra
Idles ok about 2300 when warmed up, transitions great, rpm's pick up until 3/4 throttle and then stop. I can see the carb barrel moving more but no rpm gain. It responds to the hs needle so I don't think I'm starving it for fuel. Spins 9700 rich at 3/4 throttle but when it opens up more it has me wanting more.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Keith

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
h9pts, I WAS having the same problem with mine. I also have the 82 and this past Sunday I think it gave up the ghost on me after 3/4 of a gallon. I had help at the field of several Saito owners and we couldn't figure out what the problem was. Out of all my flights I think I deadsticked all but 3 or 4. The engine was in a Chapman Cap 580 and the plane has taken a beating due to the deadsticks that didn't make it back to our asphalt runway[].
After the last time it died in flight and tried to crank it again and it would hardly turn over. Turning the prop by hand it is real tight and I cannot feel the compression stroke so it looks like it may be ruined now. If anyone has any idea what happened PLEASE let me know. I'd love to hear that the valves need adjustment or something simple like that but my luck is not that good.....

Don't get me wrong, I know these are great engines and tuning was most definately the culprit but right now I'm hoping that something simple needs adjusting or something to get it back running. I plan to call Horizon tommorrow and see what they have to say.

jm, they are probably going to ask you to check the basics first anyway, so verify that you are using the correct size tubing, the vents aren't kinked, the engine isn't running too lean, etc.
Also, how about tank position? Is it too high, too low, or too far from the engine? At least you can have answers to these questions for them when you call.
Just my $.02

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Jim, have you checked the valve lash? I had a Saito .82 start to dead-stick on me, and I pretty well screwed around with EVERYTHING else trying to get it fixed. I just KNEW the valve lash was right..... Well, it wasn't. Once I adjusted the valve lash, and got the needle valves back to where they were in the first place, it became my favorite engine again. It NEVER dead-stick now - AGAIN!
I don't know what to think about your lack of compression, unless you had the throttle closed. Try putting some light oil down in the glow plug hole, and see if that brings your compression back. If you screwed the needle valves in and out like I did, you might have to go back to the factory-recommended settings and start re-tuning it.
Personally, I doubt your engine is destroyed. It just wants a little attention!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ken6PPC, Man do I hope you are right!
N1EDM, Not only myself but several others at the field that are experienced with the Saitos double-checked everything for me just in case I missed something but it would run fine on the ground level, nose high, on it's side etc. BUT, in flight it seemed that there was no difference from half throttle to full throttle, in fact if you left it 3/4 to full throttle it would eventually lose rpm and die unless I brought it back down to half throttle soon enough. So we thought it was lean....maybe it was??? 2 turns out on high speed and the kicker to me is that three turns out on the low is what was required for it to not sputter from idle transition. On the last ultimate flight it also burned my glow plug which to me is another sign of a lean condition so I'm sure it's due to tuning but we couldn't find the sweet spot for nothing.

No, not yet. I can only take so much heartbreak a day you know? I just finished rebuilding my Raptor Titan 50 heli. At least I learned something from that experience.....3 mistakes high! Next time I'll listen, sometimes confidence only gets you in trouble. I'll check it tommorrow and let you know what I find, I need some sleep.

If you don't see any smoke at full throttle, fatten up the HSN 1/8 turn at a time until full throttle flight speed starts to reduce slightly, at that point your barely rich, and 1/8 turn it should be about right. Im thinkin you have the HS too lean, and your compensating with the LSN. If my idea seem to help, once ya get the high speed good, lean the LSN 1/16 turn at a time until it doesnt load up at idle and die. If you can remove the fuel line from the carb, and crank the engine by hand slowly, CCW, with your finger over the exhaust, and fuel come out the hose, your fuel delievery is fine. I think it's just a matter of finding the sweet spot for the needles.
