The 17-4 really buzzes when you give the engine the throttle pulling out of a hover
Vertical thrust like you wouldn't believe

I've watched the 17-4W on a H9 Twist 3D 60 and two different U-Can-Do 60's with OS 120AX and Saito 125's. For 3D Style it seems perfect.
However, the 17-4W does not have the speed that pattern people enjoy

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi all. I recently purchased two Saito engines for my winter projects... an fa-62a aac and an fa-125a aac. I've run them both on a bench and I'm very impressed. Mainly just wanted to pop in here and say hello, but I do have a question about the smaller one. It's going on a Sig Somethin' Extra that I've nearly completed kit building (40 size). I would like to begin to learn some 3D on this plane and I wonder if I've gone a bit shy on the power. Any tips/mods for getting the most out of the small engine? Thanks!

While some people run 82's in their SSE's it can do pretty well with the 62.
Try a APC 14-4 prop when you get more used to the plane

It depends on what you want to do with the SSE. At my field, we had sport flyers and 3D flyers with them.
For 3D I would suggest Dubro featherlite foam wheels. A mini servo for throttle. And, a fuel tank somewhere around 8-10 oz.
You are going to have prop clearance problems with anything over 12". I made a 1/2 inch block for my main gear and still could not level the plane on the ground with a 12.25" prop.

they are pretty reliable about giving you 200 rpm over the original muffler unless you load the engine down with an over size prop
They have a great sound also. The engine just sounds like it has more snap

To me the turbo head mufflers look better so there's the bling factor in that decision to buy one,or not.Don't know how much they cost, from memory about a hundred bucks each here. That amount of money would step me up two engine sizes with the accompany..ing? deeper exhaust note and a lot more vertical performance to boot. What do you think?

Adding a Turbo Header means slightly REDUCED weight, with an increase in power! I love mine!

I am sorta new..But I saw an add for a plane with a saito 180 in it.. The add states it can either be gas or glow....How is that possible? I have 2 180's and that might be nice to do..Cheaper on fuel

I have a Turbo Header on my Saito 56 that is on a Hanger 9 Ultra Stick 40. It has the flaps on it also. I run a APC 13-4 prop. It has plenty of vertical. I really like the combo.

Some have an ignition system
He may be just stretching the Gas-Glow concept whereby you run about 85% gas with the glow fuel and still use the glow plug
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8009384/tm.htm
There is a long thread about doing this over in engine conversions
Running on gasoline they run much hotter and don't have as much power it is best you think of this engine as a glow engine and if you are interested in gasoline then read the thread

I know Saito makes a 125 gas and a 125 glow as well as the 220 gas and glow but did not hear of them also making a 180 gas motor. Anyone have a link?
Thanks,
John

To my knowledge the 180's do not come as gas from the factory
The factory ones have a Walbro style carb on them with an ignition system

So all I do is put gas in it?

In a technical sense, it was determined many years ago that all model glow engines were to be considered gas engines from a legal standpoint. The term had nothing to do with gasoline. It had to do with burning a liquid fuel that is burned while in vaporous form. This tidbit of information has caused interpretation problems since the very late Fifties.
The Saito 1.80 in stock form will not run on gasoline without being extensively modified to include a spark ignition system. Even when burning gasoline, the gasoline must have the proper amount and type of lubricant mixed with it. So, effectively, no, the Saito FA-180 is not capable of running on just gasoline/petrol. The poster was mistaken or confused.
