RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
It is funny, I have used my gas generator off and on to run my small arc welder. But a couple of years ago we had a big snow, ice and sleet storm that killed power in our neighborhood, mainly on our side of the street, and that was the time the generator wouldn't run. A neighbor across the street loaned me his generator as their power was still on at the time. it figures the one time you need it, it doesn't work. Buit maybe with the temps being down around 20 degrees F didn't help it out any for starting. So now I take to firing it up and running it for a while before the bad weather gets to our home. Also I have a few cans of starter fluid on hand now too. Of course I tend to use the starter fluid with the model deisel engines, so it is iffy, if I'll have any when the bad weather hits again though.

I was going to comment that the exhaust must be plugged up since the exhaust pressure was way too high.
Here is the big Saito we use when the power goes out.
Maybe the weather will be nice tomorrow and I can test my changes. We are catching so pretty good winds off the hurricane right now.

Amish that was funny and maybe earl you like to guess at the horsepower i'm getting out of the r3 200 if i give you some figures, others please too.
Running 13% klotz200 5% degummed castor and 10% chinese nitro.Started to tune the high speed needle from the factory setting of five turns out.Every full turn in at quarter to half turns gained a couple hundred rpm till the next quarter turn gave me about 600rpm extra.Fine tuning after that peaked at 8600 with a mas classic 18x6,came back about 4 clicks and it's rock steady at 8300.The low speed needle is a big surprise compared to my singles as it's almost spot on a tad rich but that will be good for now.Transition from 1000 to 8300 takes about a second and is linear,no hesitation.Running the engine drew a crowd and comments about which type of fourstroke sounds better..in my mind i won

A MAS 18x6 prop at 8,600 RPMs results in:
ps=2.727, HP=2.693
Speed 78.6KM or 48.5 mph
static thrust 16.37 pounds

Yeah on planes prop rpm just about tells all.
On Helis a 2,500 head speed tells you nothing other than the head speed is 2,500 RPM

Thanks Bob, I cut the generator off at 9:30 last night and fired it again at 8:30 this am. It only used half of the 5 gallon tank in the six hours running yesterday, I was surprised at that. I don't fool with any of those prop programs, I just pick an engine and prop and go fly, it works every time. I prop most Saitos to the mid nines, little ones like the .30 and .40a at 10,000, the 1.25 at 9,000 etc.

Dad has a CG .40(40-61 2S or 40-90 4S) sized cub he's working on after setting about 15 years. It was originally going to have an OS FS-60 that we sold since it's now a collectors item, and he just bought a Saito 82. Kinda going for the bush plane setup with 5" pneumatic tires, big prop with a low pitch.
We are looking for a engine mount for it since the original one already has holes drilled in the wrong places and doesn't look the best. Any suggestions? Thanks
Cory

i have used this one with great success. adjustable width and it will hold up to drilling and tapping.

I have a question about my Saito 180. I ran it a few days ago (bought used). I put Morgan 5% nitro, 5% castor, 15% synth fuel. Used a 16x8 prop. The exhaust was very smokey, but when I pinched the fuel line, it quit instantly. So that told me that I was not running too rich. The throttle transitions were also instantaneous. But at those settings, I was getting around 8500 rpm at WOT. Is that expected, or should I be getting more power? I imagine higher nitro will give more RPM, but for now, I plan on running 5%. Thanks.

This all sounds about right for a Saito 180

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Just breaking in a FG-20.
Sweet, sweet, sweet is all I can say.
Question to put out there, as we have some debate around my place.
When setting the high needle peak, do you run at wide open or do you pick a certain higher rpm, ie: 6500 rpm and peak from there ?
One other question regarding the FG-20 specifically.
-Any problems running just the cooling header w/o a muffler or flex exhaust: ( valve burn or other issue, due to lack of back pressure )?

The high speed needle peak is just that, at high speed, not mid-range or anything other than flat out and fully open on the throttle barrel for nitro engines. I'll guess that gassers are the same.
I can't answer your other question about the muffler. I will say that nitro four-stroke Saitos from the 80's, such as the twin .90, single 1.20 or .45, did not have mufflers, only exhaust pipes.

When adjusting a four stroke mixture, the peak is not as sharp as on a two stroke.
It is rather flat on a four stroke with the high speed lean cut off point the most identifiable aspect. You want to position yourself richer than this point. How much richer is defined by a estimation of the amount of unloading in flight.
Likewise, on the low speed, the point where the engine will transition to high speed is more identifiable than any other point. You want the mixture as lean as possible but yet still rich enough to enable a smooth transition to high speed.
As Hobbsy says, the beginning points are with the low speed absolutely rich and to find the cut off point for the high speed and position the HS needle just richer than this point to prevent backfires.
Then adjust your LS as lean as possible but yet to where the engine will still transfer to high speed.
Then go back and readjust the HS to allow for the engine unloading in flight and for the lower fuel level in the tank as the fuel is consumed.

Saitos run smooth and use little fuel when you get the needles right, especially the low speed.
You can set your hs needle really rich where it smokes a lot. Then, go from idle to wide open as you watch your exhaust. You'll see the rich smoke begin to meter in around 80% or so.
W8YE is better than me at hearing a 4 stroke peak. That's okay. I've got a TNC tach too.

I was at the field most of the day Wednesday with my Saito 62 on a Ultra Stick 40.
Shot a lot of touch and goes.
On landing would pull the throttle all the way back. I couldn't hear the engine but it never faltered. As the plane go closer on flair out, I could hear the engine just idling away.

That model was my first experience with Saitos. Once I had that one I never looked at another mfg's 4c again when adding to the collection. Love 'em all, but the FA-62 will always be the "special" model for me.

I still have that 56 and a couple others too. I was looking and feeling of the compression on that 56 today and thinking about putting it on a Telemaster 40.
I always thought that 56 was the greatest engine ever made but I have a lot of other Saito engines and that 62 runs just as good. It must have around 14 gallons through it since I've had it and I bought it used? I also have another 62 and a 56 that are NIB.

Can anyone advise on the power difference between an old Saito 45 and the later (but early model) 45S? I have an Eindecker that flies fine with the 45 but has nothing left in reserve, I also have a 45S which would bolt straight in.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anybody can help with fuel line setup issue.
Just bought a Satio four stroke .65 (golden Knight). Iwas wondering if anybody has a diagram of the fuel line setup. The Satio seems to be a different setup from the .70 FL OS Max four stroke Ihave. Ihave one port on the exhaust , on the Satio, and also a port on the back of the engine.
Usually there are two ports on the exhaust, one to vent in the tank and the other to the back of the engine. I don't the fuel line configuration and no manual.
thanks for any help
