3D Nut -> Need help with painting tips (8/24/2004 4:02 AM)

Hello,
I was wondering if I could use a latex flat house paint over prime vinyl covering and then spray clear urethane to protect it from nitro fuel.

Thank you in advance

Yes you could. Latex paint does not like to adhere to smooth surface, so you will need to slightly roughen up your covering with 320 grit sandpaper.

You certainly can, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a "flat" either. I have had very good success using semi gloss.

Make sure the vinyl is "scuffed" and I strongly suggest using a primer also. If you add 1 - 1 1/2 caps of FloTrol to 1 quart of UNDILUTED paint, it will retard the drying time a little. This, in turn will allow the paint to level itself better (brush strokes disappear and runs/sags are minimized ).

For thinning, use regular water. Windshield washer fluid WILL TINT the paint. In darker colors it is not noticeable, but with clear and white you will definitely notice it.

If you are spraying latex, you do not need over 30 psi. If you have to use more than 30 psi the paint is too thick. If brushing latex, I have had my best results using a foam brush.

FWIW - Water base polyurethane does not yellow over time as the oil base polyurethane does.

I've never done what you're asking about, but you should get in the habit of always testing things before trying them on your model no matter what anyone tells you. If they're wrong, it's your model that's screwed up. I'm not saying anyone is wrong here, but test to be safe.

I will like to thank everyone for your replies,

I was planning on priming the vinyl covering with an black oil primer as the base coat, followed by two coats of B.M. Regal flat paint, and then three coats of clear urethane. Will the latex urethane hold up to nitro fuel? This project is a flying TANK and I need to keep it as scale as possible.

Happy landing

Spiro

I use a lacquer type primer for all my painting. Again, I prefer the sandable type since I wet sand the primer with 400 - 600 prior to painting.

The urethane clear coat should hold up to 10% (or more ) nitro.

I suggest doing a test panel and letting the urethane dry for AT LEAST 7 days, then pour some raw fuel on it and leave it for 24 hours. You will know a lot more then. The ONLY clear coat or paint I am aware of that is totally fuel proof are the 2 part clear epoxy or the 2 part epoxy paints, however, those are a heavy finish.

Remember, latex/water base finishes takes 7 - 10 days to "cure", but can take as long as 30 days depending on temperature and humidity. A good test to see if it is cured is to firmly press a finger on a hard spot (I use the cowl ). If a fingerprint remains it is not cured. The fingerprint will disappear in a day or two.

Hope this helps.
