The new Airtronics SD-10G 2.4Ghz radio system made the cover (upper right corner) of the February 2009 issue of Model Airplane News.

MAN is reporting (pg. 26) that the SD-10G will feature fully assignable switches, re-positionable switches, and multiple flight modes. They also mention that the 20-model memory of the SD-10G is expandable with a memory card and that the memory settings can be backed up onto a PC.

The magazine also features a nice photo showing the transmitter up close with the LCD display and programming buttons in clear view.

Looks nice! I had an Airtronics Infinity 600A for a while and thought it was a very good radio for its day. It's what got me hooked on assignable switches.

I loved my Infinity 660A as well. It only went ot it's resting place this year when a friend dropped it onto a concrete driveway.

If the 10ch 2.4 gig set is priced right, it should be a great follow on from the RDS 8000. Is there any indication of pricing yet?

Mike Greenshields from Global Hobby said that it would be "sub $500," so it's more than just a rumor. Unfortunately, we still don't know if that means $499.99 in the U.S., or if Airtronics will be as aggressive at pricing the SD-10G as they were pricing the RDS8000.

At $499.99, it looks like a very solid competitor to the JR 9303 2.4Ghz and the Futaba 10C 2.4Ghz radio systems. Airtronics would have a price advantage, and extra 10-channel receivers will likely undercut the pricing of Futaba and JR as well.

I don't know if they'd convert a whole lot of Futaba or JR/Spektrum pilots at those price points, however. If Global Hobby and Airtronics really want to make a huge splash with SD-10G, a $399.99 price point and $99.99 for 10-channel receivers would likely draw a lot of new customers to the Airtronics brand.

I might be dreaming, but I really hope that the SD-10G is introduced by some marketing folks with some sharp pencils. Aggressive pricing and a free second receiver has sure helped the RDS8000 draw market share, the SD-10G deserves the same opportunity to get noticed.

What they really need are more receiver options. If they can do that, a $499 price for a system makes it very attractive.

Its about time I have so been waiting for this radio. I bought an RDS8000 but after flying my Stylus/XPS 2.4 for so long it was a bit a of a let down feature wise. I still use the RDS for "Quick and Dirty" projects though. Unfortunatly, the new SD will make my Stylus radios even more worthless resale wise ..... oh well, they've served me well.

Been waiting for this also. Almost bought the RDS8000, especially with the two receiver deal, but wanted a few more channels like the futaba or JR. The only thing i don't like about the new 10 channel is the case. It looks cheap and plastic. I think the black cases look better, but that's just me.

I agree. In the sun it will also reflect. I like the RDS8000 case. Black, simple, does'nt look cheap and non-reflective.

The latest 9 channel or more offerings from JR and Futaba are in silver cases. It seems to be the fashion.

I think it looks great, and feel it would look very drab in black. Also, in hot climates, black really soaks up the sun ... and gets hot. Not a good thing.

One should always leave a transmitter in the shade when not in use of course

I agree.... I don't like all black. Looks cheap like the dime store toys. I bought the RDS but think they should have at least accented the case with some silver or chrome or something.

On the other hand, I also agree that the all silver SD looks kinda "Plain Jane-ish" as well.

I'm probably in the minority, but I like a simple, durable finish. I don't care for bling. What color it is should be a function of what the materials are.

Wonder if you could paint it without voiding the warranty? You could color cordinate it with you shoes.

Am I the only one that thinks the RDS8000 feels cheap? I like the radio but I feel like it's a cheap toy. Although for $229 and all the features they must have had to cut back somewhere...

I've got the new Airtronics WW 12 2.4G radio; it's clear, and comes with a life size RC wonder woman jet.

I have held the Futaba 14MZ and played around with the various buttons, switches, sliders, and knobs. I recently got the chance to fly a friend's Rascal 110 with his Futaba 10C. I have also recently flown an IFO with another friend's JR 9303 2.4Ghz transmitter. The one common denominator was that all of these radios felt good in my hands while I worked the controls.

My RDS8000s both have that same characteristic, they feel good in my hands. They're comfortable, lightweight, and I don't get tired of holding them. I'm confident that the SD-10G will share this characteristic with all of the other fine radios I've mentioned. As for black or silver, it doesn't matter to me. I'm looking at my airplane.

I just got the new issue of Backyard Flyer, March 2009, and the Airtronics SD-10G got the same placement in Backyard Flyer that it did in Model Airplane news. There's a small picture of it on the upper right-hand corner of the cover, and it's prominently featured in the "New for 2009" blurb.

This looks like Global Hobby's marketing dollars at work more than spontaneous press coverage. The write-up appears to be identical between the two magazines. Still, it's nice to see some effort being made to market the SD-10G.

From page 18 of the March 2009 issue of Backyard Flyer:

Hopefully it will be as easy to use as the RD/RDS8000. Doesn't get any simpler.

Be cool if it came with two receivers like the RDS.

Hehe, that's no rumor, d_bodary. The SD-10G uses the same digital signaling that the RDS8000 does. According to Mike Greenshields, it will be completely compatible with the 92824 receiver that was introduced with the RDS8000. You can stock up on all of the 8-channel receivers you want right now.

It is a big letdown from the Infinity 600A. The 600A was the only Airtronics radio that I ever liked. The new one is just another plastic porcupine that is hard clean. I think I will keep my Evo. The Evo has much better ergonomics and is easier to program (once I managed to unlearn all the bad stuff from the asian radios)

The Multiplex Evo family of transmitters do seem to be a relative bargain given their reputation for quality. The prices that they're being offered for at http://www.hobbyhorse.com are quite attractive. Evo 9 Synthesized Transmitter for $379.99 and Evo 12 Synthesized Transmitter for $519.99 respectively.

A 2.4Ghz upgrade path besides XPS might be a good thing. Even if the XPS module for the Evo 9/Evo 12 works as advertised, the installation process just seems to be a little too home brewed for my tastes.

The rumor mill has it that Hitec has a new 9-channel radio system in development; it would be nice to see 2.4Ghz versions of the Evo 9 and Evo 12 offered at the same time.

We all benefit from additional choices in the marketplace. I'm quite happy with my two Airtronics RDS8000s and my Futaba 7C 72mhz transmitters and don't expect to upgrade again anytime soon. I sure wouldn't rule out getting excited about the SD-10G or a 2.4Ghz version of the Evo 12 and taking the plunge, however.

If people are already talking about the aesthetics (or lack thereof) of this radio....the Multiplex radios are the last ones you should be mentioning .
I mean, I'm sure they're great radios...but BOY are they ugly!!

Hehe, the beauty is in the comfort and control.

Just received the January 2009 edition of Model Aviation, and they had a bit about the SD-10G from the iHobby Expo:

I don't buy radio's to look at. I buy them to control my models. Good feel and balance while I am flying is what I want. The best looking Airtronics radio was the Infinity so they discontinued it and went back to plastic porcupines. The ugliest was the JR plastic porcupine that looked like it came from ToysRUs that I had about 20 years ago.
