Since President Obama was nice enough to include an extra $250 in last months Social security benefit as part of his economic stimulus package, I took the opportunity to purchase a Futaba FASST module and receiver for my Futaba 9z transmitter. The module is a direct replacement for the one I was using and has the antenna built into it. The collapsible antenna stays in the transmitter. You can see that in one of the images. The new receiver was installed in a trusty model that I have been flying for years. The new receiver is extremely small and fit in very easily. It was mounted on a bed of foam and secured with some Velcro straps. The antennas were installed in accordance with the instructions. One of them was installed along the side of the model pointing to the rear and the second one was mounted on a former perpendicular to the first one. Thin silicon glow fuel line was used to keep the antennas in place. The ends of the antennas, which are the actual antennas, were left exposed. After switching the transmitter to the PPM mode, I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything was working as before including the fail safe. I did not have to do the binding process since the pair were already bond be fore they were shipped. At the field, I performed the reduced power tests with the engine off and running. I was able to walk way beyond the prescribed distances with no loss of control. It was time for flying. Once again I followed the instructions and pointed the transmitter antenna down for maximum antenna pattern illumination. I stayed in close for the first flight and it was uneventful. The model flew exactly as before. On the second flight, I flew out to my usual distances with no problems. After I landed I realized that I had forgotten to put the transmitter antenna down but had left it pointing straight at the model. This caused no loss of control so there is plenty of margin. On the third flight I took the model out to the point that I could barely tell which direction it was heading and it still worked fine. I even pointed the antenna directly at the plane with no ill effects.

At this point I can say that this was a seamless and easy transition to the spread spectrum band. I would also like to thank the President. He got his economy stimulated and I got my 2.4Gig system. Thank you Mr. President.
