Default New Fei Bao Swordfish Sport Jet

Hi All,

Thought some of you might be interested in this new sport jet from Fei Bao. I have had the privilege of assembling and test flying the first sample of this 3.1metre (122") long model, and wanted to post a few photos and a link to one of the flights we made last Saturday, during the first flight session.

The Swordfish is of course all moulded and weighs just under 18Kg without fuel, fitted with a JetCat P180-Rx turbine. It flies extremely well, and coped without problems with the blustery wind we had to contend with, as well as the relatively restricted airspace we had at the flying site. The only minor issue with the flight shown is that I caught the flap switch during the landing approach so touched down without flap, meaning the landing was a lot faster than it should have been.

Photos and video were kindly taken by my good friend Bob Petrie.

I like everything except the canopy shape outline!
Nice to see a 'modern' design with decent tailplane size!

Catherine if it fly's half as good as the Dolphins do it's another winner for the fish family

Hi Rich,

No problem to add more photos, but I will not be in a position to do this until early next week, so please be patient!

Nice lines, not keen on the canopy though.

Dave at what ratio/size does the tailplane become a 'good' size?

Many things affect this, fuselage area, shape in front of the balance point. This fuselage will produce less lift than the many Hawk clones, but 10 % is a good starting point on jets, up to 12%

Yeah, I think you're better off doing a canopy style similar to the Rebel, or just eliminating it all together & going drone style. I think how this one is just distracts from an otherwise nice looking jet with sleek lines. My 2 cents.

Hi Rich,

Please find attached a few photos as requested, there will be a great deal more in an article on the model in the next RC Jet International magazine. The fuselage splits for transport like many models, but this one has been thought through, it takes less than 2 minutes to reassemble the fuselage, as the access to the allen screws used is easy, and the tailpipe mounts to the rear fuselage, even though it protrudes into the front section.

Why on earth are the tanks so far forward?

Even I have to agree with DW on the tanks, need to be positioned around CG guys......

Interesting info on the tail size ratio, good to know the Vixen ticks boxes then

Yes, I was concerned about the positioning of the tanks when I assembled the model, but found that in flight this did not seem to bother the model much. Over the course of an 8 minute flight only 1 click of trim was needed to keep the model perfectly in trim, and the stall did not seem to vary between full and low fuel loads.

Possibly the large tailplane area helped with this!

On this style of airframe trimming during the flight is poor, I can't see an immediate reason why they could not have designed them further back. Big tail and a gyro might well fully sort it, but it's still strange to go to all that trouble and miss the basics!
There are so many new designs being released that are compromised, huge cost of making moulds and the basics established years ago ignored!

Hello to all, The Demo Swordfish that will be flown at Florida Jets is almost done and the large modifications that we have done are great. New Fuel tanks with integrated 30oz smoke tank, new intake design and ducting. The canopy area was modified to look much better with Colins recommendations along with our suggestions the Jet really looks sharp. Will have video this week and will post link asap. We will be running an amazing deal on this plane starting the week of Florida Jets. Stay tuned for the sale of a lifetime.

It's a sport jet. Why does it need a canopy at all? Just put a cool paint scheme on it.

FB is making what I think are the best built models in the arf world. CF laminate formers, airex layup, strong gear and beautiful paint. If it flies like the Dolphin it will be a winner.

We will have the full line up of Fei Bao Aircraft at Florida Jets ready to fly. I personally have the large Dolphin and the Swordfish Flies exactly the same just faster and in the slow speed regime slower. The plane is very precise and has no bad habits. I am working on the manual of the plane as we speak to have setup a breeze and real numbers for throws, CG and final setup. below i will attach a few pictures of my Dolphin so you can see how perfect all these planes fly.

I agree 100% this plane flies amazing. Fei Bao build quality is excellent and with few corrections and modification we have done since the prototype it is that much better. Definitely a winner
