Spencer, I use Solidworks, but it's a bit pricey if you're going to use it for just model stuff. If you can learn to use Fusion 360, that's probably a smart route. I've never played around with it. Solidworks is very similar to Catia and ProEngineer, if you've had any experience with those systems. Here is an assembly pic of my Su-17 Fitter project (1/6 scale).
Good Mig-29 info from Halcyon!

SolidiWorks is the way to go, you can buy it outright or get it via a subscription service, 3months, 6 months etc. been using since the late 90's and it is very powerful. They do screw you on the pricing yet from a commercial point, one design can recoup costs very quickly.
I looked at Fusion when it first came out, the only issue I found is it is cloud based which means you need to be connected to the server to work.
The surface CAD is one thing the internal (structural) is almost more important, load bearing, control setup etc. SW has the capability to stress test pretty well anything as long a specify the material and load points.

1/5.5 scale is probably not a bad scale to attempt.
The Rusjet MiG-29 is 1/4.75, so you're a bit smaller than that. Those guys have their process down though, as far as maintaining weight of the structure.
The Skymaster ARF is 1/7, so now you can get good predictions for weight targets.
If you want the model for competition, it would be smart to keep it within the IJMC weight restrictions of 20 kg dry weight - that way you don't exempt yourself from that event. And, as you start modeling the aircraft surfaces and start doing internal arrangements, it's relatively easy to edit the scale as needed (up to a certain point!)

Миг-29 2x90мм EDF ~ 1/9 (Чертежи для всех) (rcdesign.ru)
Forgot to add this link, it is in Russian yet you can get the jist.
Also has a 1/9 scale CAD STEP file that you might want to use for initial layout and to get your head around the design.

Solidworks also has a stripped down “educational” version included with an EAA membership. For $30/yr, its worth it just for solidworks.
when it comes to drawing the solid model, i highly recommend drawing it in 1:1 scaling as it helps show inconsistencies in the model more easily than one drawn at the preferred size.

Ive been busy budy with life and, well, just got back from vacation in Costa Rick 🙂And still have a few projects ahead of it like a carf p-51 and then a mibo a-10. I do want to put my hours in a hotel to use and design something cool. I have a buddy who designed a model completely with CAD, was able to 3D print his molds so once the design was done in cad the project moved rather quickly!
